Medicine and Big Business Could it be an “Unhealthy Alliance?” Truth is, maybe we have elevated medical science to a level of unquestioned trustworthiness which it does not entirely deserve. Science in the field of medicine and health has produced many wonderful results, and will continue to do so. It seems, however, that conventional medicine is considerably better at administering “trauma” medicine, than at promoting the overall health of its patients. If you are in a car wreck, go to the emergency room. They can do remarkable work at reconstructing a damaged body. If you break a bone, they can fix it. But when you move beyond the scope of repairing traumatic injuries, conventional medicine’s record is, shall we say, less impressive. The conventional wisdom for most “non-traumatic” conditions is to do one of the following: Cut it out using a surgical procedure, Medicate it with high powered pharmaceuticals, the overall impact of which on our bodies is generally unknown (can you say “Celebrex”), or Radiate it with toxic radiation, the consequences of which we have all seen. If we wanted to be completely cynical, we would ask which pharmaceutical company paid for the “latest ground breaking medical study” reported [...]

Texas Governor Rick Perry recently signed an executive order requiring schoolgirls to receive the Gardasil vaccine against cervical cancer. Gardasil is made by Merck. Here’s a surprise — Governor Perry’s order has gotten the backing of Gardasil’s maker, Merck. Gee, I can’t figure that out! I wonder if Merck dabbles in politics, too. Hmmm, I think I did read an article recently that reported that Merck had doubled its lobbying budget in Texas. This is scary, folks. Don’t think they’ll stop in Texas, and don’t think they’ll stop at Gardasil. What’s next? The good governor said it (the required vaccination) “makes good economic sense.” How true. I wish I had owned some Merck stock before the governor made the announcement! Somebody’s going to make a pile of money when the government starts making it the law that we must use a company’s products. The vaccine costs about $360 for a three-shot regimen. $360 times the number of schoolgirls in America. A tidy increase in gross revenue for Merck, mandated by government. Aside from making “good economic sense” for Merck and its allies, I wonder if it makes “good health sense” for the girls forced to receive the vaccine. I wish [...]

Basically, it means that the doctor’s or hospital’s treatment killed you! Whatever happened to the admonition of Hippocrates, “As to diseases, make a habit of two things — to help, or at least to do no harm.” Consider the following information excerpted from a paper by Gary Null, Phd., and others: A definitive review and close reading of medical peer-review journals, and government health statistics shows that American medicine frequently causes more harm than good. The number of people having in-hospital, adverse drug reactions (ADR) to prescribed medicine is 2.2 million. Dr. Richard Besser, of the CDC, in 1995, said the number of unnecessary antibiotics prescribed annually for viral infections was 20 million. Dr. Besser, in 2003, now refers to tens of millions of unnecessary antibiotics. The number of unnecessary medical and surgical procedures performed annually is 7.5 million. The number of people exposed to unnecessary hospitalization annually is 8.9 million. The total number of annual iatrogenic deaths is conservatively estimated to be around 783,936. It is evident that the American medical system is the leading cause of death and injury in the United States. The 2001 heart disease annual death rate is 699,697; the annual cancer death rate, 553,251. [...]

Is the FDA looking out for the consumers’ interests? Actually, it is more a “partner” of the Pharmaceutical Industry. In an unusually candid comment for a senior government official, Dr. Herbert Ley, former FDA commissioner, remarked: “The thing that bugs me is that the people think the FDA is protecting them. It Isn’t. What the FDA is doing and what the public thinks it’s doing are as different as night and day.” Think about it folks.
